Four Pillars of Service
The American Legion

In 1919, a group of World War I veterans, unhappy with the way they saw fellow veterans being treated, joined together to try to make a difference. They formed an organization based on four pillars - veterans rehabilitation, Americanism, child welfare and national security. In the years that followed, The American Legion has not strayed from these founding principles. Everything we do, every stand we take, every cause we support goes back to the ideals of our founding members.

Patriotism (Americanism)

To inspire patriotism and good citizenship through
patriotic observances and civic instructions for our youths in school.

Youth (Children and Youth)

Defense (National Security)

Veterans (Veterans' Affairs and Rehabilitation)
